Trims range from the base model SR all the way up to a new-to-the-platform Trailhunter.

While Toyota may not have a "build" page up on their website for the new Tacoma, we are hopeful that soon you can configure this amazing truck to your liking. Once you do, prepare yourself to place an order. It will be hard not to. Let's unpack each trim and see what to expect from the highly anticipated updates.

Standard equipment for the 2024 Toyota Tacoma starts with an i-FORCE 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The base engine found in the SR produces 228 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. Staring with the SR5, and continuing throughout the higher trims, you have 278 horsepower and 317 ft-lbs of torque. This is with the eight-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.

An available 6-speed manual transmission drops the power down to 270hp and 310 torquey foot-pounds. Smiles find their way to those longing to manage three pedals, even with the slight difference in these numbers. The manual transmission also packs automatic rev matching and anit-stall technology.

A standard smart key system and push-button start barely matter after finding out every trim level is equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. Tacoma's safety suite will include features like Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection and Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist. All the Safety Sense 3.0 tools gain control by the truck's radar and camera systems.

Tacomas configured as a PreRunner will have the XtraCab option along with the SR and SR5. This cab allows for the 6' bed, and adds ample storage solutions behind the two front seats. The driver seat has a long-slide feature for the most room while loading your gear. Passenger seats fold flat to act as a workspace, and even includes a water bottle holder.

Two-wheel drive keeps the powertrain simple on the 2024 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner. The middle-of-the-road trim adds a front suspension lift, taller BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, and an electronically locking differential in the rear. Topped-off with 17" TRD allow wheels, this Tacoma PreRunner may be the most budget-friendly model without skimping on features.

Another new powertrain option debuts for 2024 as the most powerful one ever seen in a Toyota Tacoma. Available in all trims from TRD Sport and up, you have the i-FORCE MAX. This turbocharged 2.4L hybrid engine makes 326 horsepower and 465 ft-lbs of torque with the help of a 48hp electric motor powered from a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack.

2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport gets black 18-inch TRD wheels and badging to create a mildly-aggressive look. Color-matched door handles and fenders flares pair with a mesh grille and hood scoop for an elevated sporty appearance. Aluminum pedals bring the interior up a notch too. A TRD sport-tuned suspension stacks up performance points for this trim, and lays the groundwork for the powerful i-FORCE MAX engine option.

If the TRD Pro is outside your budget, TRD Off-Road Tacoma is the go-to choice for you hitting the trails. It is just as capable in many ways. Improvements for 2024 include Bilstein remote reservoir shocks, and available electronic front sway bar disconnects. This trim is also where Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select come into play.

Coming up from the TRD Sport trim, the TRD Off-Road trades in the hood scoop and painted fender flares for a more rugged look. It also comes with a TRD set of black wheels with a machined alloy lip.

Toyota debuted the Trailhunter trim in 2022 on the full-size Tundra. They have been teasing us about a Tacoma version, and now we have it! Trailhunter is Toyota's overland-focused off-roader model. The truck starts with a set of Old Man Emu 2.5" remote reservoir shocks with co-development involving aftermarket off-road company ARB. 5' and 6' bed options allow you to configure this overlander to best fit your needs.

ARB provides more for the Tacoma Trailhunter than just dampers. The company helps Toyota with designs for high-clearance front bumpers, robust recovery points, rock rails, and a steel rear bumper. Trailhunters also receive a bed utility bar with removable MOLLE panels. You can also add light- or heavy-duty ARB bed racks to support gear like rooftop tents and awnings.

Ground clearance is further increased by two inches with 33-inch Goodyear Territory R/T tires, and a high-clearance exhaust. Skid plates line the belly of the Tacoma Trailhunter for protection from rocks. You also get a slim, snorkel-style, high-mounted air intake on the passenger side for the standard-equipped i-FORCE MAX.

Exterior design items also set apart the Trailhunter. Look out for bronze wheels, badging and grille. A 20" light bar and color switching RIGID LED fog lamps keep the trail and camp site well lit. At camp, you have a 2400W AC inverter to power all your off-grid accessories like an ARB Fridge Freezer. This Tacoma also comes pre-wired to use three auxiliary toggle switches on the dashboard for things like a winch or an air compressor.

For ripping high-performance trail days, choose the TRD Pro. A set of TRD red aluminum front upper control arms improve suspension geometry and reduce unsprung weight. Fox 2.5-inch Quick Switch 3 (QS3) shocks have internal bypasses to improve ride and handling. Choose from three different settings on the shock to set your ideal feel on each trail.

The TRD Pro sits two inches higher and 3 inches wider than the SR5. It also receives performance enhancements through a TRD air intake and TRD exhaust, raising the efficiency of the standard equipped i-FORCE MAX engine. A RIGID LED off-road lighting package and front-skid plate add more piece of mind for the intense situations this Tacoma will encounter.

By far, the most interesting quirk of this new 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is their IsoDynamic Performance Seats. It utilizes an air-over-oil shock absorber system to control vertical and lateral dampening. This helps stabilize the driver and passenger while limiting fatigue experienced on rough terrain. These seat dampers can adjust for things like body weight and can bypass the system if desired.
