Beresford bike taxi takes tourists to the beach

Jun 01, 2023

The Town of Beresford has hired summer students to show visitors its 1.5-kilometres of beach.

Five years ago, the municipality ordered a special bicycle to cart around curious visitors, and then began hiring the summer students to give tours in English and French.

"Sometimes they are just from Quebec, sometimes they're from the region, Moncton, Saint John…everywhere," says Jeremy Soucy, a second year tour guide.

The beach taxi is also favoured by locals visiting the beach.

Due to limited parking, they park their vehicles at the arena a couple hundred metres away.

Soucy and his colleagues make the trip back and forth between the arena and the beach front about 20 times every shift, but the number of people per trip varies.

Soucy says, he's managed to fit five people in one trip.

"There was two parents, plus the grandma and two kids. The parents were at the end of the taxi, the grandma in the middle, and the kids were in the laps of their parents."

The bicycle, built in China, is equipped with an awning, a battery-powered horn, flashing lights, and a first-aid kit, stowed underneath the bench.

The beach taxi service runs every evening and on Sunday until the end of August.
