Name the NYC Department of Transportation's first electric cargo bike

Nov 26, 2023

The Department of Transportation's new electric cargo bike.

The city's Department of Transportation has put it to the people to name its first electric, pedal-assist cargo bike.

The agency Tweeted out a poll Thursday asking New Yorkers to cast their votes on four possible names: Cargi B, DOT-E, Bike Lane Jane or Cargo Margot.

Cargo bikes are just what the name implies: they’re bikes that can be used to transport goods or perform other tasks that can reduce the number of cars on the road. The DOT says it is using the vehicle for bike lane repair and other minor road maintenance activities.

What should we name our electric, pedal assist cargo bike?

To encourage more widespread use of the cargo bikes, the city is planning to pilot microdistribution centers this summer. Pedal-assist versions of the bikes function much like conventional bikes, the key difference being the "assist'' mode provides riders a boost as they pedal. Depending on the model they can cost in the low thousands of dollars.

The city's suggested names are almost as good as the names Scotland has given its snowplows: License to Chill, Sir Salter Scott and Gritty Gritty Bang Bang, to name a few.
